Is Fostering Right for You?
Did you know that when you foster a pet in your home you’re increasing the likelihood of that pet getting adopted? Whether you realize it or not, you’re teaching that animal basic pet mannerisms that appeal to future adoptive families. That’s a big deal!
If you’re a seasoned pet owner, fostering is a fantastic option for testing out the waters and seeing if adding a new pet to your home is a wise decision based on your family dynamics. Breed, size, age and gender all play a role in how animals may interact and it’s crucial as a responsible pet owner that you understand what you’re getting into before it’s permanent.
If you’re a newbie in the world of pet ownership, fostering is also a great first step because it’s only temporary. You choose the length of time and the type of animal that you invite into your home. You’ll quickly learn if you’ve made the right decision! Even if it turns out that it’s not really your thing, you can rest assured knowing you may have saved that animal from being euthanized in an overcrowded shelter.
Here are a few key questions to ask yourself when considering bringing a foster animal home for the first time:
Indoor space - Do you have enough room? Believe it or not, even a small bathroom is enough room (temporarily) for a kitten or puppy in their first few weeks of life.
Outdoor space - Do you have a yard? If so, is it fenced-in and free from hazardous objects and poisonous plants and/or chemicals?
Exercise - Do you have time in your day to go on a walk? Most dog breeds need at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, if not more.
Socialization and Family - Do you have other animals or small children in the home? Existing family pets may need time to warm-up to a new house guest. Likewise, children need to be taught that their new furry friend may be scared in a new environment and must understand how to safely interact with it.
At the end of the day, fostering is a great option for both seasoned pet owners and newbies alike. I hope you consider fostering a shelter pet if your heart and home is open to it. You just may save a life!
