How to Take Great Pics of Your Pets with a Cell Phone
Let’s face it: our pets are undeniably adorable 24/7. But the moment we point a camera at them, they suddenly transform into uncooperative little chaos machines. As a professional pet photographer, I know this all too well. While nothing beats a professional photo session (shameless plug incoming), here’s how you can up your pet photography game with just your cell phone—and a good dose of patience.
1. Lighting is Everything
Natural light is your best friend! Photograph your pet near a window or outside during golden hour (the hour after sunrise or before sunset) for soft, flattering lighting. Harsh midday light can create unflattering shadows—no one, not even your golden retriever, looks good with raccoon eyes.
Pro Tip: Avoid using the flash. It can startle your pet and give them that eerie, glowing-eye look, which is only cute for Halloween.
2. Get on Their Level
Don’t be afraid to get down on the floor—or even lie flat on your belly—to capture your pet’s world from their perspective. Eye-level shots create a sense of connection and make your photos feel more personal. Plus, who doesn’t love the chance to get face-to-face with all that fluff?
3. Use Treats (or Toys) Wisely
Treats and toys are fantastic attention-grabbers, but don’t overdo it, or your pet might get too excited and turn the photo op into playtime. Hold the treat or toy just above your phone to encourage that perfect “what’s that?” head tilt. Bonus points if you make silly noises—anything to get their attention!
4. Focus on the Eyes
The eyes are the window to your pet’s soul—or, in the case of my cat Winston (rest in peace, buddy), the portal to mischievous plotting. Make sure their eyes are in sharp focus for a captivating shot. Tap on your phone screen where their eyes are to adjust the focus and exposure.
5. Take Advantage of Burst Mode
Pets are fast and unpredictable. Use your phone’s burst mode to snap a series of photos in quick succession. That way, you’re more likely to capture the perfect moment in between the blinks, yawns, and sudden zoomies.
6. Capture Their Personality
Whether your pet is a snoozy lap cat or a goofy, tail-wagging adventurer, try to showcase their unique personality in your photos. Document their quirks—like the way they tilt their head, curl up in a ball, or carry that one (slightly gross) favorite toy everywhere.
7. Keep the Background Simple
Declutter your background to keep the focus on your pet. A messy room or distracting objects can take away from your furry star. If all else fails, a plain wall or a cozy blanket makes an excellent backdrop.
8. Edit, Don’t Overdo It
Most smartphones come with built-in editing tools or apps like Snapseed or Lightroom Mobile. Adjust brightness, contrast, and color to make your photos pop, but don’t go overboard—your pet doesn’t need a filter to look fabulous.
