Dog-Friendly Hiking Trails in San Diego

After what’s felt like weeks of rain, there appears to be a small shift in the weather signifying that spring is coming! If you and your pets have been feeling cooped up due to being stuck indoors, consider going on a dog-friendly hike on one our city’s bountiful hiking trails.

One of the things I love about San Diego is the diversity of terrain. Whichever region you live in, you are within an hour’s drive to the beach, desert or mountains.

When it comes to bringing your pet, some trails require your dog to be leashed while others do not. Please refer to city guides for any given location before you head out to make sure that you’re adequately prepared for the day.

A few tips to keep in mind when hiking with a furry companion:

  • Don’t push your dog too hard. A hike may seem easy to you, but dogs cannot regulate their body temperature like we can. This is why it’s important to bring lots of water to keep them hydrated.

  • Always be mindful of Rattlesnakes, as they are prevalent in most terrains throughout our county. Keep your dog away from dry brush and tight, shady spaces where they may be hiding. Always seek emergency veterinary care if your dog is bitten, as mere minutes are crucial.

  • Make sure your dog’s nails and paws are trimmed and free of sores. Also keep in mind that hot temperatures, especially on asphalt trails, can burn their pads. If your dog tolerates it, opt for a well-fitted pair of dog shoes.

  • Stay up to date on flea and tick meds and always check your dog’s body before heading back home after a day of hiking. Ticks carry nasty diseases that you don’t want to bring home!

    Happy hiking!
