Breed Highlight: The Shiba Inu

Colorful and playful professional portrait of an elderly Shiba Inu dog photographed by Alison Huntley Pet Photography

As a professional pet photographer, I get to work with all sorts of furry friends, but there’s one breed that always manages to keep me on my toes: the Shiba Inu. If you’ve ever met one, you’ll know exactly what I mean. If you haven’t, buckle up, because you’re in for a wild (and adorable) ride.

Personality:

Shiba Inus are like the James Bond of dogs—suave, independent, and just a little bit mysterious. They have an air of confidence and aloofness that makes them the “cool kids” of the dog park. But don’t let that fool you; beneath that dignified exterior lies a playful and sometimes mischievous heart.

One of the first things you’ll notice about a Shiba is their signature “Shiba smile.” This charming expression can melt hearts and convince you that they’re up to something. And trust me, they probably are. Whether it's stealing socks or devising escape plans worthy of Houdini, Shibas are always on an adventure.

Aesthetic:

There’s no denying that Shibas have a distinct and beautiful appearance. Their compact, muscular bodies and curled tails give them a look of both elegance and strength. Their coats come in various colors, including red, sesame, black and tan, and cream. Each Shiba’s coat is unique, adding to their individual charm.

Photographing a Shiba Inu often feels like capturing a living piece of art. Their expressions, movements, and even their moments of stillness exude a natural beauty that’s hard to match. They’re perfect subjects for both candid shots and posed portraits, provided you can convince them to cooperate!

Why We Love Shibas:

Despite their sometimes aloof nature, Shibas are incredibly loyal and affectionate with their families. They have a playful side that comes out when you least expect it, and they’re always ready for an adventure, whether it’s a hike in the mountains or a nap on the couch.

Photographing the Shiba Inu:

Now, you might think that capturing these delightful dogs on camera would be a piece of cake. After all, they’re practically models, right? Well, yes and no. Shibas are indeed stunning with their fox-like faces, plush coats, and expressive eyes. But getting them to sit still for a photo? That’s a different story.

Shibas are known for their independence and strong-willed nature. They’re the “I’ll come to you when I’m good and ready” type. This means that a photo session often involves a lot of patience, a bag of their favorite treats, and occasionally, some impromptu squeaky toy serenades.

But when you do capture that perfect shot, it’s all worth it. Their expressions are priceless, ranging from the regal and contemplative to the downright goofy. And then there’s the “Shiba scream,” a high-pitched yodel that they unleash when they’re particularly excited (or just feeling dramatic). If you’ve never heard it, imagine a tiny opera singer warming up their vocal cords—hilarious and a bit startling!

As a pet photographer, I’ve learned that working with Shibas requires flexibility, creativity, and a good sense of humor. But above all, it’s a rewarding experience that results in some of the most stunning and memorable photos.

So, here’s to the Shiba Inu: the independent, spirited, and endlessly entertaining breed that keeps us all smiling. Whether you’re a Shiba owner or just an admirer, there’s no denying the special place these dogs hold in our hearts (and on our camera rolls).
